How Cast Iron Is Made: Inside the Lodge Cast Iron Factory

By October 30, 2025No Comments

A well-seasoned cast iron skillet always feels special. It might be a family heirloom or a new pan waiting for its first meal, but each one reflects real craftsmanship and effort. I had the privilege of inheriting my great-grandmother’s cast iron skillet, and it is one of my most prized possessions!

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to take a Lodge Cast Iron factory tour in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, with fellow members of Women in Manufacturing – Tennessee Chapter. Lodge has become the American brand for cast iron cookware, known around the world for its quality and durability. Seeing firsthand how cast iron cookware is made gave me a whole new appreciation for the precision and pride behind every product.

🔥 From Raw Iron to Cookware Icon

Every piece of Lodge cast iron begins with raw pig iron, recycled steel, and other natural materials melted together at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F. The molten metal is carefully poured into molds made of sand, clay, and water. This is an ancient technique that is more than 1,000 years old.

Once cooled, the castings are broken out of their molds, cleaned, and inspected before moving on to finishing and seasoning.

🧯 Risk Management in Manufacturing

As someone who works in risk management, I couldn’t help but notice how safety and risk control are built into every step of the process. Managing molten metal, heavy equipment, and high heat takes a strong commitment to procedures and communication.

From personal protective equipment to temperature controls and quality checks, Lodge’s factory is a living example of how risk management principles apply not just in insurance, but in every successful operation.

👩‍🏭 Women Leading in Manufacturing

One of the most inspiring parts of the visit was connecting with other women who are shaping the future of American manufacturing. The Women in Manufacturing (WiM) Tennessee chapter hosted the event. It was a wonderful opportunity to build relationships with women in the manufacturing industry and learn something new.
